ONLINE with Malaya Kime
This magazine with Malaya Kime is 165 pages long, including the cover and thank-you notes. It’s in A4 format, available as a digital download, and shot entirely on film.
Malaya and I created this issue on the Central Coast, shooting inside a beautiful house in Umina Beach from just before sunset until late in the evening. It was our first time working together, but the whole shoot settled into a really easy rhythm almost immediately.
We worked through six different looks across the afternoon and evening, stopping for dinner before picking things back up for the final two. The styling, the little props around the house, and honestly, the wine, all helped shape the mood and gave the issue this intimate, relaxed and slightly whimsical feeling.
Malaya has a really quiet confidence in front of the camera. She never felt over-rehearsed or overly performative, and that gave us space to let the shoot unfold naturally. As the light disappeared, the work shifted with it, moving from softer frames into darker, more atmospheric images without ever feeling like we were forcing a different direction.
A lot of what I love about this issue comes back to trust. There was enough space to talk, experiment, slow down, and let each look develop without rushing to the next thing.
This issue is built around intimacy, softness, colour, trust and the feeling of spending an evening making something together rather than simply moving through a shot list.
This issue reflects so much of what I want ONLINE to stand for: trust, presence, and creating work that feels real.
You can find Malaya at @malayakime_.
You can also get each issue at a discount via my Patreon, where your support helps me continue creating these shoots, funding travel, film and time. I’m grateful to everyone who has followed this project, and I hope you enjoy the work as much as I enjoyed making it.
