My first trip to Perth ended with what was easily my favourite sunset of the entire week, and it became Issue 37 of ONLINE with Ella Worthington.
This issue spans 161 pages, including the cover and thank-you notes. It's presented in A4 format and available as a digital download, blending both 35mm film and digital photography.
Ella and I spent the afternoon getting ready at an Airbnb before making the short drive to Grant Street Beach, just above Cottesloe. We took our time settling into the shoot, talking through outfits and letting the direction evolve naturally before arriving just as the light began to soften. What followed was one of the most spectacular sunsets I photographed during the entire Perth trip.
It was my first time working with Ella, and she brought a quiet confidence that shaped the whole issue. She moved effortlessly in front of the camera, never overthinking a moment, and there is a softness to these photographs that I only fully appreciated once I sat down to edit them. Her striking eyes and porcelain skin seemed to catch every change in the evening light, creating images that felt both cinematic and understated.
About two thirds of the way through the shoot, my film camera died. After exhausting every option to bring it back to life, I switched to digital. Normally I'd see that as a compromise, but instead it pushed the work somewhere unexpected. Rather than trying to recreate film, we embraced what digital could do. As the temperature dropped and blue hour settled over the beach, the rhythm of the shoot changed. We pulled jeans back on, slowed everything down, and created some of my favourite photographs from the entire day.
Editing this issue was surprisingly difficult. There were simply too many images I wanted to keep. At 161 pages, it became one of the largest editions of ONLINE so far, not because I wanted it to be bigger, but because the story felt incomplete without those quieter moments at the end.
This issue is about trusting the unexpected. A perfect sunset, a camera that refused to cooperate, and discovering that sometimes the photographs you never planned for become the ones you remember most.
